Alt-shift arrows, Ctrl-alt mouse click?

Why is column mode Ctrl-Alt left-click for mouse, but Alt-shift arrows for keyboard? Why not Ctrl-Alt for both, or Alt-shift for both?

Have just tried this, and Alt-shift does work for both, though Ctrl-Alt only work for mouse button selecting.
